Basketball Courts done right

Most backyard basketball courts fail in one of two places: a crack running through the key, or a hoop that starts leaning after a couple of winters. Both come from the same shortcut, not enough underneath. We pour the pad on a compacted base with reinforcement, lay the control joints out along the court lines instead of across the middle of play, and set the hoop anchor in its own footing carried below frost depth. A comfortable residential half court runs about 30 by 50 feet; a high school full court is 84 by 50, which is more than most lots have.

How we approach basketball courts

Compacted sub-base and a reinforced concrete pad, typically around 30 by 50 feet for a residential half court.
In-ground hoop anchor set in its own footing below frost depth so the pole and backboard stay plumb.
Control joints laid out along the court lines and the key perimeter rather than through the play area.
Single-plane pitch of about one inch per ten feet so the court sheds water instead of icing over.
Acrylic color coating with regulation striping, or a broom finish with painted lines for a simpler build.
