Pickleball Courts done right

A pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet of lines, but the pad wants to be about 30 by 60 so there's room to chase a ball behind the baseline and to set posts and fence outside the play area. The bounce is what people notice first, and it's decided by how flat the pad is screeded and how evenly it's surfaced. A court that ponds water, or has a control joint running through the kitchen, never plays right no matter what coating goes on it. We pour on a compacted base at about a one percent single-plane pitch, sleeve the net posts before the concrete goes down, keep joints off the play area where we can, and surface with an acrylic or cushioned acrylic system striped to regulation.

Method & materials

How we approach pickleball courts

Pad sized around the 20 by 44 foot playing area, typically 30 by 60 feet so there's real run-off room.
Compacted sub-base and a reinforced pour screeded flat for a consistent, true bounce end to end.
Single-plane pitch of about one inch per ten feet, side to side, so the court drains and doesn't pond.
Net post sleeves set before the pour for a net 36 inches at the posts and 34 inches at center.
Acrylic or cushioned acrylic surfacing, striped to regulation including the seven-foot non-volley zone.
