The foundations under older New England homes are often rubble, cobblestone, or fieldstone laid up with lime mortar. Over a century, the mortar washes out, stones loosen, and water and cold air pour in. These walls need a different touch than poured concrete: soft, breathable repointing that lets the wall handle moisture, plus targeted stabilization and drainage, not a hard skim coat that traps water and accelerates the failure.
